Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) have become the weapons of choice for anti-national elements operating in various Indian states due to the easy availability of explosives and accessories. The popularity of IEDs is only likely to increase further with time, due to the obvious advantages which these offer to terrorists. It is imperative therefore, that CRPF, which is spearheading the fight against Naxalites (Maoists) and terrorists, remains several steps ahead of these elements, through rigorous training.

With this as the aim, the Institute of IED Management, CRPF established at Pune (Maharashtra) to act as the nodal centre for imparting training to all CRPF and other Police Force personnel for countering and developing capabilities against IED menace.

The Institute was inaugurated on 23rd February 2012 by Honorable Union Home Minister, Government of India, Shri P. Chidambaram in the presence of Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Prithviraj Chavan and Director General, CRPF Shri K. Vijay Kumar IPS.

Salient Features Of Iim

  1. Dedicated to finding ways of Managing IED threat.
  2. Equipped to provide end to end Training to all levels of counter IED professionals.
  3. The state-of-the-art Model Room: with models of all major IED incidents across India & even abroad.
  4. IED Training Lab: for hands on training on detecting, deactivating / neutralizing and destroying IEDs of various types.
  5. Sand Model Room: to help students training on planning counter IED operations.
  6. Counter IED Range: with counter IED exercises, involving security forces, terrorists and by-standers. Use of RF wireless based IEDs which can be shifted from anywhere to anywhere to set new exercises every time.
  7. An institute with all Latest Counter IED Equipments and Devices.
  8. Database of all IED incidents with facilities for data management and intelligent assessments/predictions.
  9. Research on IED matters, especially advancements in the world, best responses and practices.
  10. Bringing out SOP, Guidelines, circulars etc. on all aspects of IED management.
  11. Bringing out Quarterly Publications of all issues/incidents/responses/best practices in India.
  12. Maintaining IED ARCHIVE where IEDs recovered from field are displayed for making trg more realistic.

New Training Centres:-

Vide letter No.II-27012/17/2011-PF.III, dated 23/05/2013 MHA has conveyed sanction of the President for raising of new establishments and augmentation of existing Recruits Training Centres at an estimated cost of ₹1,277.56 crores as per details given below:-

  1. Augmentation of the training capacity of 5 existing RTCs at Neemuch, Avadi, Peringome, Srinagar and Rajgir by creation of additional infrastructure.
  2. 3 new RTCs at Latur (Maharashtra), Jodhpur (Rajasthan) and Amethi (Uttar Pradesh)
  3. 01 new Counter Insurgency & Anti Terrorism (CIAT) School at Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh)
  4. 01 new CoBRA School of Jungle Warfare and Tactics (CSJWT) at Belgaum (Karnataka).

The establishments are to be institutionalized from the financial year 2013-14 to 2016-17
